The Tear of Aphrodite
In the mythology of ancient Greece, the mother of pearl was born the same moment as Aphrodite herself — when the goddess of love rose from the sea, drops of water fell from her body and, touched by divine light, became pearls where they landed. The Romans called them unio, the singular, the incomparable — because no two were ever alike.
In Persia, pearls were believed to be tears wept by the moon. In ancient China, they were carried inside the mouth of dragons and governed the rains. In the Ottoman empire — the civilisation whose hands are reflected in every piece crafted in our Istanbul atelier — pearls were sewn into the robes of sultans and draped at the throats of queens, their lustre understood as a mark of divine favour.
Cleopatra, in the most legendary display of abundance the ancient world recorded, dissolved an enormous pearl in wine and drank it to prove to Mark Antony that no banquet on earth could match her wealth. Even in dissolution, the pearl made a statement.
