Unveiling the Craftsmanship: How Jewelry is Made and What Doesn't Tarnish

Every Piece Begins with a Story

Behind every piece of Ece London jewellery lies a journey — a slow, deliberate transformation of raw materials into something powerful, personal, and poetic. Jewellery, to us, is not just an accessory. It’s a sculpture with meaning, a fragment of myth made wearable, and a craft passed down through generations.

From hand-sculpted wax carvings to open-back gemstone settings, our process blends the ancient with the eternal — ensuring each piece holds not just beauty, but intention.

How Jewellery Is Made: The Ece London Way

Our creation process starts long before a gemstone is set. It begins with storytelling a symbol, a myth, or a memory we wish to preserve in gold.

  1. Design & Inspiration
Each design draws from ancient mythology or historical motifs. From the Pegasus to Pomona, every pendant and ring is rooted in narrative.

  2. Wax Sculpting
A unique aspect of Ece London’s craftsmanship, our intaglio and form designs are sculpted by hand in wax, not mass-manufactured via machines. This gives each piece a one-of-a-kind texture and soul.

  3. Casting & Engraving
The wax molds are then cast using the lost-wax technique a method as old as the artefacts we study. Artisans from Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar engrave the fine details by hand, especially our intaglio designs.

  4. Stone Setting & Finishing
Our gemstones — ethically sourced and individually selected are set by hand. Many of our pieces have open backs, allowing stones like Carnelian, Moonstone, and Lapis to touch the skin, amplifying their energetic benefits.

  5. Polishing & Plating
Final pieces are polished, tested, and plated in 22k gold vermeil our signature metal, chosen for both radiance and durability.

What Jewellery Doesn’t Tarnish? Understanding Materials That Last

Not all metals age the same. Exposure to air, moisture, perfumes, and even body oils can cause oxidation or tarnishing in some jewellery. But at Ece London, we craft with materials that are designed to endure — both physically and emotionally.

Our signature vermeil is created by coating 2.5+ microns of 22k gold over solid 925 sterling silver. This isn’t your average gold plating — it’s thicker, richer, and longer-lasting. With care, it can retain its lustre for many years.

  • Why we use it: It offers the glow of solid gold without the prohibitive cost — perfect for luxury that’s also accessible.

  • How to care: Store in a dry pouch, avoid chemicals, and gently polish with a soft cloth after wear.

Solid Gold

For our fine piercing and custom bracelets collection, we use solid 14k gold — known for its longevity and hypoallergenic properties. It’s ideal for piercings, as it doesn’t tarnish and reacts minimally with skin.

Durable Gemstones

Stones like Topaz, Emeralds, Lapis Lazuli and Carnelian are not only beautiful but resistant to wear and tarnish. These heirloom-grade stones maintain their brilliance over time and are ideal for pieces worn daily.

The Secret to Jewellery That Lasts

Jewellery that lasts isn’t just about the metal — it’s about how it’s made. A slow-made, hand-crafted piece will always age better than something mass-produced.
At Ece London, we don’t just make jewellery. We make modern relics. Designed to move through time with you.

Understanding how your jewellery is made invites you into its soul. It’s not just about the sparkle — it’s about the legacy of craftsmanship, the integrity of materials, and the intention behind the design.

When you choose a piece from Ece London, you’re choosing:

  • Slow fashion over fast trends

  • Story over spectacle

  • Craft over mass production

And most importantly, you’re choosing jewellery that lasts — in every sense of the word.

FAQs

What is gold vermeil?
Gold vermeil is a thick layer (minimum 2.5 microns) of gold over sterling silver. It’s more durable than standard gold plating and offers a luxury look at a more accessible price point.

Does vermeil jewellery tarnish?
With proper care, gold vermeil is tarnish-resistant. Store in a dry pouch, avoid water and perfume, and clean gently.

What metals don’t tarnish?
Solid gold, platinum, and stainless steel are generally tarnish-free. At Ece London, we use 14k solid gold for piercings and 22k gold vermeil for most designs.

Which gemstones are best for everyday wear?
Diamonds, sapphires, topaz, and carnelian are durable stones that resist scratching and tarnishing, making them perfect for frequent wear.

Where is Ece London jewellery made?
All our jewellery is handcrafted in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, combining ancient techniques with modern sensibilities.

Is your jewellery hypoallergenic?
Yes. Our metals are nickel-free, and our solid gold piercing pieces are hypoallergenic and safe for sensitive skin.
